Anime Thoughts: Week 7/31/2016

Here are my thoughts on this week’s anime.

Ep 5

ReLIFE 5 Cap
Life lessons, son.

“Trying to knock others down a peg just means lowering yourself.” That’s a good lesson. Instead of opting for social espionage, if you don’t understand someone, sometimes it’s best to just throw the conversational fastball and ask them directly. It takes a lot of courage to do, but it’s usually the best way to get the answer you want. I’m glad Kariu and Hishiro were able to get on friendly terms, now we can move on to more interesting things.

Tales of Zestiria: The X

Ep 4

Zestiria 4 cap
Don’t suppose anyone brought a big umbrella?

Wow, another tornado. It’s like every time the plot reaches some kind of stopping point, here comes the tornado to ruin everyone’s day. While I do appreciate ramping up the stakes as I said before, I hope they don’t rely on this tornado too often. Yes, it is helping give a little more weight to the malevolence thing, but c’mon, that can’t be all there is to it. Malevolence is still an incredibly nebulous concept, and you can’t keep dodging exposition with tornados. Side note, Lailah is still one of my favorite characters; she strikes a good balance of being wise and serious and cute and funny.

The Morose Mononokean

Ep 5

Mononokean 5 cap
This lovely timeshare can be yours for only a small investment.

Whoa, curveball. Look at Hanae using the Conqueror’s Haki like a big man all of a sudden. When the stone guy called him “dangerous”, I didn’t think he meant that literally, but there’s some kind of spooky mojo going on there. I wonder if it has anything to with Fuzzy… hmm, anyways, I’ve gotta say it again, I’m loving the art direction of this show, mostly the Underworld. All the fog and water gives it a kind of mysterious vibe, but the bright pastel colors make it look very warm and inviting. I wouldn’t mind living in such a pretty place if I were a youkai.

Active Raid Second

Ep 4

The best commanding officers have face scars.

Cleanliness aside, Kuroki settled into the leadership role pretty well. He was always work-focused, he carefully and cleverly pursued his leads, and he made good use of his resources and subordinates. Dude could be a real chief one day, assuming someone hired a housekeeper for him. I’m a little surprised that Mythos- or Jirou now, I guess, was so talkative with him. I guess the humblest man is one whose plans already crumbled once. I wonder if he’ll get to wear a Willwear again at some point.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak – Future

Ep 4

dangan-future 4 cap
And then there’s this jimmies rustler.

I KNEW IT! I KNEW Gekkogahara was Monaca! Admittedly, not… quite in that fashion, but it still counts! Though that does beg the question, if that Gekkogahara is a robot, where’s the real one? Is there even a real one? Ugh, so many variables. Much as a loath to admit it, Munakata’s right on the money; this is, more than likely, a gigantic xanatos gambit. Either the entire Future Foundation is wiped out, or a traitor gets to plant themselves as a hero. It’s a win-win for the villain. Curse you and your poorly defined rules, Remnants of Despair! Also, it figures that the episode where Tengan shows his true power (and some power it is) would be the one where he more or less dies. I mean, he ain’t definitively dead yet, but the only person who survives the ol’ rebar through the chest is Deadpool, and he’s no Deadpool.

New Game!

Ep 5

New Game 5 cap
I’ve heard of “piercing comments’, but this is ridiculous.

Boy, this show ain’t giving me a lot to talk about. I mean, it’s not bad; the girls are cute and their shenanigans are entertaining enough to keep me watching, but I was hoping for a little more of the creative process of making a game. It seems less like an industry anime and more like just an office comedy that happens to be in a game company (though, to be fair, I’m the one who called it an industry anime in the first place, so maybe that was just an incorrect assumption).

Show by Rock!! Short!!

Ep 5

SBRShort 5 cap
Ugh, it’s like it’s barfing rainbows into my eyes…

Well, so much for Tsurezure’s origins. Maybe next week. In the meantime, I see Trichronika is just as… attention grabbing as usual. Shu☆Zo is quite overbearing with the whole “shining thing” (don’t give me that look; the star is part of his name). It seems kind of rude how he’s always calling Kai and Riku “twins”; they got names, y’know.

Mob Psycho 100

Ep 4

mob psycho 4 cap
Despite being a former cult leader, Dimple is surprisingly sensible.

Despite being a sort-of-villain, Dimple makes a good audience surrogate. With a little responsible use, psychic powers could definitely make you popular; I’m glad we have at least one character who can point that out on a consistent basis. He’s obviously never going to possess Mob, though. Mob would smell him coming a mile away. On the subject of psychic powers, though, now we have an idea of what Mob would be like if he were a total asshole, thanks to Teru. It’s one thing to consider yourself the protagonist of your own life, but to claim you’re the protagonist of the world is rather haughty. Here’s hoping Mob takes him down a peg.

Sweetness and Lightning

Ep 5

Sweetness 5 cap
Damn right, they are.

I would think doughnuts are more of a breakfast fare than lunch, but I guess you would need to wake up pretty early in the morning to make them in time. I have to say, I’m just as surprised as Iida that Kohei actually has friends; he just seemed so needlessly professional with the other teachers at school, I never pegged him as a very social guy, but I guess school friendships do still count. Yagi seems like an okay guy, though he seems to spoil Tsumugi a bit with all those snacks. Who could blame him, really? I’d spoil the hell out of that girl.

Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak – Despair

Ep 4

DR3Despair 4 cap
Look at that grin. He knows exactly what he did, and he doesn’t even care.

Goddammit, Komaeda. God. Dammit. You and your luck. You make people crap their pants and blow up a gym and you don’t have to lift a finger. Why the hell wasn’t he expelled? He claimed responsibility; even if indirectly, he did it! Screw talents, the kid’s a menace! And yet all he gets is a suspension while poor Yukizome gets knocked down. Though, I suppose, knowing Komaeda, even if he was expelled, he’d still find a way to put his grubby fingers where they don’t belong. We also finally got insight into Ando and Kimura’s history that they were discussing in Future-side. Frankly, I’d say it was a matter of time before something went down between those two; talk about an unhealthy relationship. Now I’m kind of hoping Ando eats it in Future-side.

This Art Club Has a Problem!

Ep 5

Art Club 5 cap
This is why I don’t usually hand my phone to people.

When the protagonists are away, the idiot shall play. Collette has an unusual talent for setting in motion bizarre series of events. Paint the face, teacher passes out, Uchimaki gives mouth-to-mouth. It’s like the world’s strangest flowchart. It seems like the Art Club is a bit lacking in the common sense department, but I guess that’s what makes it funneh. By the way, that mural they made may not wash off, but honestly, if I was a student at that school, I’d be pretty stoked to swim in a pool with a cute mermaid painted on the bottom. Might make a cool tourist attraction or something.

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

Ep 5 (Shorts 21-25)

Saiki 5 cap
The 2016 incarnation of Men Without Hats.

A fan of anime and a master at avoiding social situations, Saiki is truly a man after my own heart. I thought he said those… things on his head were just hairclips, I didn’t know they were power limiters. Or maybe I just assumed that because people kept saying “oh, they’re hairclips” during the episode he explained the mind control thing. Whoa, meta.

Ep 5

Amanchu 5 cap
Can’t say I’ve ever seen a pants-less standoff before.

Oh, yeah. I guess the club would need existing members to actually exist, not just an advisor. Ai is a bit of an energy-weirdo herself, though she’s more of the overbearing variety. I hope she continues drop kicking people as the series goes on. Makoto appears to be the designated straight man, which I guess is fitting, being the only guy and all. By the way, am I going crazy, or have Hikari and Futaba had different hairstyles every day? Gotta give props to the animators, that takes some extra work.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable

Ep 19

JoJo 19 cap
With a face like that, how could they not?

Well, glad all that got settled. I’ll concede Josuke since Crazy Diamond can fix the note, but I still don’t think Okuyasu really did anything, and to be honest, the two of them were kind of being huge jerks about this whole situation, even if, y’know, Shigechi got them drunk and tried to gouge their eyes out. Shigechi is remarkably cunning when money is involved. Dude should be a financial advisor when he grows up. Though I guess with Harvest supporting him, dude would never actually need a day job. Lucky bastard.

Time Travel Girl

Ep 5

Time Travel Girl 5 cap
Y’know, in retrospect, this is a much more natural reaction to her predicament than Mari’s.

It figures that the first time Waka gets to join in the time travel shenanigans, she gets trapped in the past by a technical malfunction. Well, she’s a smart girl, I’m sure she’ll manage, or at least Shun and Mari will fix the machine and get her back in one piece. We’re also finally getting developments with everyone’s favorite shady businessman, Mikage, who I’m sure is about to kidnap Mari’s mother. I was wondering; he knows someone keeps coming and going into the laboratory, I’m sure he could find the machine if he just had someone stake the place out like he was doing before. I guess that’s why he pays smart people to do things for him, he ain’t smart enough to do them himself.

Ep 5

Handa 5 cap
File that under “mental images I didn’t need”.

Remember, kids, feminism is not the perspective that women are superior to men, but the desire for equality between both genders. The More You Know…

President girl’s got a nasty little complex there, but I guess it’s not the first time I’ve seen childhood grudges and misconceptions evolving into complexes. That vice president of hers, though… brr, I’m getting Shimoneta flashbacks… er, anyways, speaking of complexes, it’s odd to see Handa without his. I never would’ve guessed that without his crippling social anxiety, he’d be… kind of insufferable, really. Glad he’s back to abnormal.

Ep 18

rin-ne 18 cap
I’d make a scythe out of tape if I had enough lying around.

Huh, two part episode. Don’t think we’ve had one of those in a while. Not that it really matters; I’m not exactly on the edge of my seat here. I think this show is starting to suffer from some sort of reverse-arc decay. In other words, as opposed to arc decay, which is when an arc goes on too long and people get tired of it, there haven’t been any arcs, so it feels like the series has just been spinning its wheels for a while. The episodic format isn’t bad, as I’ve said, but we need some kind of shake up, or things are going to devolve into being flat-out boring.

Food Wars: The Second Plate

Ep 6

Soma ep 6 cap
The meatiest place on Earth.

Wow, look at all that cow. It’s like the Meat Circus from Psychonauts, except it isn’t terrible. It feels like after all of that set-up with the newspaper kid, there really should’ve been more than just a passing cameo of him. He was basically Yukihira’s sidekick last week, and then it’s just “stole yer passwords, lol bye”. I guess I’m glad he didn’t sell Yukihira out at least. As for Mimasaka, I have a feeling this won’t be the last we see of him. I don’t think he’ll reach Aldini-levels of rivalry, but perhaps a close second.
